Unless you've recently gotten your license, it's highly likely that you've heard your fair share of summer driving myths over the years. While some may have a partial truth, some are just downright false, and we explained them all right here! No more arguments with your friends over who is right.
Myth #1 - Air conditioning burns more fuel
There's been a long debate whether air conditioning uses more gas than rolling down your window. There's also been debates about this the other way around. At slow speeds, rolling down your window is more economical. That being said, air conditioning is actually more fuel efficient at faster speeds, like driving on the highway. Why? Opening your windows on the highway tends to increase economic drag.
Myth #2 - Driving barefoot is illegal
Contrary to popular belief, there is no actual law in place in Ontario that prohibits anyone from driving barefoot. However, that does not mean that it's a good idea. It is important to be mindful of your feet when you are driving, like making sure you are not driving with wet feet (can cause pedals to become slippery). It is also important to be cautious when driving with sandals on, as they can fall of easier and get jammed under a pedal.
Myth #3 - You can't get sunburnt if your windows are up
Windows don't fully protect you from he suns UV rays, meaning there is a chance you can still get sunburnt. If you are prone to burning, or going to be in the car for a while, maybe consider putting on some sunscreen to save your skin.
Myth #4 - There's nothing you can do if your vehicle overheats
While you may think that there is nothing you can do, there actually is something you can do. While it may be very little, it does help a bit. It may sound counterintuitive, but turning on the heat helps, by drawing it away from your engine. It is still best to pull over to the side of the road, and wait for it to cool down or call roadside assistance. Just remember, it's a good idea to refrain from popping open the hood until the car has cooled down.
Myth #5 - You should fill up your gas in the morning
You can fill up any time of day you need, or to save a little bit of money wait until the evening. There are still a number of people who believe that they should fill up in the morning, as they believe the cooler temperature outside will mean the gas is colder and will burn more efficiently. Some also believe that as the ground heats up, the gas will expand, therefore when filling up in the evening, you are getting less gas due to it expanding throughout the day. None of these are true. Since gasoline is stored underground, and always at 13°C, therefore the outside elements will not affect how the gasoline burns or expands.
