Few automobiles elicit the kind of respect that Nissan’s mighty GT-R has earned since its introduction in 2007. It’s a car so revered, it was given the nickname “Godzilla”. Unbelievably, Nissan has made the sports car even more capable for 2017 with the limited Track Edition.
How do you make one of the best all-around performance cars in the world better? You produce a limited number with race-ready features such as super-lightweight wheels, a unique rear spoiler, Recaro® front seats and a NISMO tuned suspension.
Nissan’s GT-R was a force to be reckoned with even in its first year of production over a decade ago and the carmaker has been quietly improving the car ever since. Currently, the GT-R’s 3.8 litre twin turbo V-6 produces a crushing 565 horsepower and 467 lb-ft of torque that, with the factory launch control system called “R-Mode Start” activated, makes the car capable of a staggering 0-60 mph (97 km/h) time as low as 2.7 seconds and a standing quarter mile time of 11.6 seconds at 120 mph (193.1 km/h).
Needless to say, if you are looking for impressive performance in a car that can be driven comfortably every day, few cars match the capabilities of Nissan’s GT-R.
Now in its tenth year of production, the GT-R is still without equal and continues to feature the previously mentioned VR38DETT engine with CVTCS (Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System), a fully symmetrical and titanium dual intake, low back-pressure exhaust system and a secondary air intake system that rapidly heats its catalysts to peak cleaning efficiency. In simpler terms, this engine is truly a monster, but it’s a monster built by artisans.
Each engine is hand-assembled by a single Nissan master craftsman known as a Takumi. There are only five Takumi in the entire world and each one embraces the responsibility to inspect every component for quality and precision. A Takumi’s reputation and pride depend on absolute perfection. “We put our souls into each engine” said one Takumi, “hoping to deliver that excitement to our customers”.
To tame the monster, all GT-Rs also feature Nissan’s ATTESA-TS all-wheel drive system with patented independent rear-mounted transaxle integrating transmission, differential and AWD (all-wheel drive) transfer case.
Shifting gears comes via a dual-clutch 6 speed transmission with three driver selectable modes: Normal, R-Mode and Save. It can shift in a fully-automatic mode or by full sequential manual control from the steering column-mounted paddle shifters.
Stopping power is the responsibility of a unique Nissan/Brembo joint braking system composed of massive 4-wheel disc brakes with two-piece floating rotors and diamond pattern internal ventilation.
Performance features for the 2017 Track Edition GT-R’s have added additional adhesive bonding to increase body shell rigidity, a NISMO tuned 4-wheel independent suspension with reduced weight and additional roll stiffness, GT-R NISMO front fenders, 20 inch-wide NISMO forged aluminium-alloy wheels with NISMO-spec tires and a signature dry carbon fibre rear wing.
The interior has also been revised for the performance-minded with a unique red and black colour treatment and high-grip, motorsports inspired Recaro® seats.
