It's not easy competing in the full-sized pickup market, as the competition is fierce and constantly evolving. Nevertheless, the new 2016 Nissan Titan XD wades into battle with a raft of improvement, as well as a brand-new diesel engine for those seeking more towing capacity.
Meanwhile the Dodge Ram and the Chevrolet Silverado aren't giving up without a fight, and also have seen improvements for 2016. So who ends up on top in this battle royale? Brasso Nissan intends to find out.
The new Titan XD debuts with its best foot forward - or engine rather. Its all-new 5.0 L turbocharged Cummings diesel V8 produces 310 hp and 555 lb-ft of torque, so you can tow up to 12,300 pounds. That's more than the Silverado which can carry up to 11,800 pounds, and far more than the Ram which manages just 8,000 pounds. The Silverado and Ram offer heavy-duty versions with even greater carrying capacity, but they also cost far more than the Titan XD's $52,400 base price. And speaking of price...
Undoubtedly the Silverado and Ram will tout their lower base prices, but keep in mind that those are stripped-out fleet models. The Titan on the other hand offers amenities like an integrated gooseneck trailer hitch, trailer brake controller, and a 7-inch colour display. Also, more affordable versions of the Titan with an efficient V6 and the renowned 5.6 L V8 are promised later in the year. So while the Silverado and Ram may offer cheaper models, rest assured the Titan is still the best value for your money. Of course, getting the most for your money doesn't matter much if there isn't a trim that appeals to you. That's why...
The Titan XD offers a wide variety of trim levels, cab styles, and box lengths. With three different cab styles, as well as S, SV, Pro4X, SL, and Platinum Reserve trims, you're sure to find a Titan that fits your needs. Plus, choose from three box lengths to best suit the types of loads you carry. Of course, the Titan's rivals aren't lacking for choice either. The Silverado offers 4G LTE Wi-Fi and wireless charging, while the Ram offers air suspension as well as its own 3.0 L diesel engine. So for the moment, the more established brands offer a little more choice, but rest assured that as Nissan continues to update the 2016 Titan XD more choices and options will become available.
In the end, all of these combatants are excellent representatives of the pickup class. Despite being the newest entry into this class, the 2016 Nissan Titan XD is nevertheless a strong choice. Its powerful diesel engine and long list of standard options means it should be right at the top of your list if you're shopping for a new pickup.
